Hunger in Our Backyard: The Hidden Crisis in Kentucky Schools

Across Central Kentucky, many children start their school day carrying more than a backpack — they carry the quiet weight of hunger. Teachers often notice it first, because hunger shows up in the classroom through tired eyes, distracted minds, and discouraged spirits. Families are doing their best, but rising costs and limited resources leave many students without the nutrition they need to learn and grow.

This is one of the reasons Boone Brothers was created. Our mission is to meet this need with a solution that is simple, practical, and filled with dignity. Through our partnership with Kentucky Fish & Wildlife, donated venison is turned into Boone Bites, protein-rich, shelf-stable jerky bites that don’t require refrigeration. These packs are delivered directly to schools, where teachers can quietly offer them to students who need extra support.

But youth hunger is about more than food. It’s about giving children the confidence, stability, and hope they need to thrive. When a child receives Boone Bites, teachers often notice immediate changes, such as steadier energy, improved focus, and a renewed ability to engage in the classroom.

By strengthening school nutrition support, Boone Brothers gives hunters, donors, and volunteers a meaningful way to stand in the gap for Kentucky’s kids. When a community comes together to feed its children, the future becomes brighter for every student who walks into a classroom.
